Microsoft Office Accounting 2009

Just one more geeky post, then back to the real world I promise.
Today I got notification of Microsoft Office Accounting 2009 being available to download.

Actually, the MSOA UK site seems to still be a bit confused at the moment, mentioning 2008 version, but downloading 2009 version, and I'm having problems with the MPAN site too, but that's really too geeky.

I really do like this groovy piece of software - anyone running a small business should give the free express version a go at first - that will suit many, and the Professional version is not too expensive considering what it offers.

IE8

Well, last week Microsoft sneaked out the latest version of their web browser Internet Explorer 8, available to download from the Microsoft IE site
To be honest I was expecting a bit more drama in the press, but it really was a whimper rather than a bang.

At work we had to make some last minute changes to get things compatible, but it's all smooth as a baby's bottom now - I expect there will be quite a few webbie peeps caught out by the IE8 launch
Our pan-European daily audience of about 40,000 has just about 3% with IE8 - though I suspect we can expect this to grow if and when they release it through Windows Update.

I actually quite like IE8 and although many people will use any excuse to have a good old whinge about Microsoft being too big and all that. For the sake of those peeps you might want to consider Firefox or Google Chrome, Safari or Opera that are also excellent browsers

Saddleworth Signage

I'm not one to encourage graffiti, although I have to say that the funniest piece of graffiti I saw was on a condom machine in Belfast that said "for refund, please insert baby into slot" - got to love that Irish sense of humour!

Anyway, I noticed that somebody has made what looks like an adjustment to a local sign, proudly naming Saddleworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire - I seem to remember that this used to say something about Oldham MBC!

White Water Rafting was the order of the weekend.
Arranged through a friend, a large group of us trekked down to the National Watersports Centre to their excellent man-made white water course.

Because we were a large group, we got a good deal one the photographs supplied by Focused On Adventure. These guys have a great setup of two or three photographers with Nikon and Epson digital SLR cameras following the rafts down the course. At the end of the session they supplied a CD with over 100 images on it. This one shows me (with a red helmet) at the front getting completely submerged. Everyone got wet - without exception - but that was the name of the game, so a great time was had by all.

Took my favourite mother-in-law to York for a day trip. The place is really great, although the weather wasn't the best, it went from grey to damp to wet to thunder, lightning and soaking.

Fortunately for me, I had just purchased a Tilley hat, and I'm pleased to say that the nice people at Cotswold Outdoors in Harrogate could accommodate my fat head size!

The hat worked wonders, I walked round the place in my hat, tee shirt and shorts, staying quite dry under the brim, frequently passed by dampened druken groups of stags who all thought it was hilarious to say "G'day" to me. Well, laugh now they might, but he who laughs last.... you see, I know what's in store for them - years of marriage!!!!

Only kidding, I'm very happily married to my lovely wife, I just don't think that either of us realised that we got each others in-laws as part of the bargain!! Les Dawson eat your heart out!

What's so special about going for fish and chips? I hear you ask.

Well, as a Yorkshireman, I'm proud to tell you that I can remember going to "Harry's" in Guiseley long before it was the Corporate super-giant it is now.

In my day it was just a posh chippy up the road!

Interestingly enough, and not very well known or signposted, around the back of main Harry Ramsdens restaurant stands the original Harry's hut. Though I'm not old enough to have queued up at Harry's hut - unlike my parents!

Harry's fish and chips has a secret recipe for their batter, which does taste really good. Although friends in the food industry have told me what they think it is, I still have have some allegence to Harry's even though they are a Corporate Super Giant - so I will not share the secret with anyone!

I can see why Tebay service station has won awards, it is by far the best, highest quality service station I have ever attended - even the local graffiti artists are highly educated with graphic design degrees.

I'm not normally one for snapping photos in the gents (for obvious reasons) but fortunately, there was nobody about when I noticed this, so I was able to take a photo of this budding marketeer pointing out the crop marks on this sign.

For those of you not in the know - these marks show where you should cut the poster out of - anything outside the crop marks isn't meant to be shown.

I do wonder who goes into the toilets with a red (or any other colour for that matter) marker pen. In all my loo visits in my life, I can honestly say that I've never knowingly had a marker pen on my person when being in there. Maybe I could get ahead in the marketing business if I started taking a marker pen in with me on future visitations!

Equally as hot as Milan, a nice place but I didn't get to see any of it apart from the Airport and the office.

To be honest, after spending the last few days travelling about and the heat I wasn't really up for much tourism - but even then, the sunny weather and nice people left good memories of the place.

At last, a business trip to Milan with a few hours to appreciate the beauty of the place.
Although the weather was scorching hot - 32 (Centigrade) at 1 o'clock in the morning, the whole place is fantastic.

Italy remains "undiscovered" to me and I'm really looking forward to this year's summer holiday to find out an awful lot more about the place.

Saddleworth Whit Friday

Every Whit Friday, there's a very big, famous Brass Band Contest held in all the villages of traffic.

For the music lovers and tourists, it's wonderful, a whole day of parp parp tootle-doodle, boom boom. In fact, if you've ever seen the film Brassed Off, they play in the Saddleworth competition.

For the locals though (speaking as one) I have to say, it's chaos!! The whole area comes to a standstill - traffic queues up behind the processions, parking becomes a big fight and the incessant tootle of brass bands, though pleasant for the first hour or so, really begins to get on your wick a little after a whole day of it. Thank heavens, I'm at work during most of the day!! During one of said traffic jams I snapped a pic of this sign that shows some consideration for the locals ordering the drummers not to beat time!!

Anyway, it's only once a year, so I'll let them have their fun, but it won't stop me joining in by shouting, "that's not a brass band - I contest that !!" now and again just to keep my sanity

Crikey - I forgot to mention that I passed Belfast George Best City Airport.

Nice that they named the place after him, I'm not really a football fan, but it seems like a kind gesture.

Excuse the wonky shot by the way, it was very much a stop very quickly and snap with the camera phone. The police really wanted to keep traffic moving and I didn't want to disagree with them!

A day trip to Belfast to meet some of the family and enjoy some of the sights of the city.

A lovely calm day meant that the Lagan was very still and had beautiful reflections.
This one of the Waterfront Hall is one of my favourites.

More recently this sculpture of a female figure has been added to Thanksgiving Square, the sign underneath reads "This female figure represents various allegorical themes associated with hope and aspiration, peace and reconcilliation and is derived from images from Classical and Celtic mythology. Her position on the globe signifies a unified approach to life on this earth. It encompasses oneness, while celebrating the diversity of culture that exists in our global village.

The aim of the sculpture is to bring people together and to change hearts and minds; to make bridges across the divides in our community. To work towards a peaceful, happy existence for everyone on this planet by respect for each other, their cultural heritages and all our aspirations.

This symbol creates a tangible first statement of our long term objective in bringing people together to foster a happy and fulfilling life for all and a sense of gratefulness for all that life has given us."

To be honest, I think this message "went on a bit" - but what I can tell you is that I've spent quite a lot of time in Northern Ireland over the past few years and it is a great place, full of peace and beauty. The people are warm and welcoming, and it is a shame that for some reason, some outsiders still think that Belfast is "a dangerous" city and hasn't changed since the 1980s. At least we can say that this unjustified stigma does tend to keep the opinionated fools away - which means that the city is preserved for the nicer, more open minded visitors!

Travelblog - Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

Not really for those who are scared of heights.
The rope bridge has been improved over the years and now has "netting" on the sides.
I'm told that it used to be just a rope for your feet and a lean-to rope for your hands.
Then upgraded to planks and guide ropes - this you can see on the NT web site

Now, there's little or no danger, but strong winds make it a bit more fun!

The lighting was just great on the Waterfalls walk as well, some slower shutter speeds give the water this fluffy whoosy look

Lucky timing meant that our visit to the North Antrim Coast coincided with the Celtic European Festival of the Sea. Although we only saw one tall ship leaving Ballycastle harbour, it was a spectacular sight.

The nice thing about tall ships in open ocean is that there's no frame of reference for date. A little bit of post production sepia toning and this could be in the early 1900s instead of the early 2000s !

Travelblog - The Giant's Causeway

One word to describe this place - Amazing!

I simply can't get my head around the idea that this place is naturally formed.

The National Trust now own this along with a large part of the rest of the North Antrim coast, and they seem to be doing a good job of maintaining this unusal geological feature. Just one word of warning though...
I'm advised that the rather pricey £5 car park fee goes wholly to the local council and the Trust get not a penny of that, so please be sure to make a donation or join the National Trust when you are there.

Ava still seemed to manage to attract the attention a large number of the tourists. For some reason, she was an especially big hit with our American friends.

Although the holiday weather was superb, bright and sunny. I'm told that the Causeway actually looks best on a stormy day with waves crashing against the rocks. All the same, it was still fantastic in the afternoon sun.

Travelblog - Ballintoy

Took the "High Speed Luxury Vessel" (Stena HSS) across from Stranraer to Belfast - what a nice crossing, very smooth and very fast.

Spent the night in Belfast and went out to McHughs for a great meal and good craic, followed by a spot of clubbing at the Odyssey, although I think I must be getting too old for all that melarky!

All in all I can really recommend Belfast for a good holiday location in general as well as a great night out.

The following day travelled up North to the Beautiful North Antrim coast and settled in to our gorgeos holiday cottage at McShane Glen. I can't say enough good things about this place, a teeny oasis of cottages in the middle of green fields overlooking the sea, centrally placed with convenient access to all the good tourist attractions

Fame at Last!

At last!!
One of my photos has (kind of) become famous.

Now appearing on the packaging of one of the products at work (Brother).
The lower left corner of this Brother DCP-340CW box shows part of one of my pictures of our best friend's first little boy (Adam) playing in the playground in Uppermill.

Apparently there are millions of these out there in Europe
- Damn, I should have asked for some license fee!

Wonderful Copenhagen this week.

I've been working with people from Denmark for quite a few years now and I have to say that these people (in particular) are the nicest and easiest to get on with and are just very laid back, cool and groovy.

Having now spent some time in Denmark, I can see that this seems to be true for Danish people in general - all really lovely. I can thoroughly recommend going there.

Flew straight on from Zurich to Paris for more meetings in the French office and another nice weekend with the family in France again.

With all this travelling I'm doing at the moment, I'm hoping to save up some airmiles!!

One thing I'd recommend to anybody else who travels on planes is to get some anti-noise headphones. They are just superb and you can have a really pleasent trip - even the bumpy ones seem more tolerable when you don't have to listen to the roar of engines and rushing of wind for a couple of hours. Sony in-ear type are my personal preference and well worth the investment.

Switzerland on Business next. Stayed in the city centre this time in an excellent hotel - Jaczuzzi in the bathroom, but sadly I was too knackered to give it a go.

Things seem to be expensive in Switzerland, but I'd also say that the quality is better.

Zurich airport - what a place, it just seems like a massive flat area criss crossed with tarmac everwhere - I've never seen so many taxiways and runways.

Went to Paris office on Business, the thing about working for a Japanese company and travelling with business is that you get used to foreign food, and actually become a bit adventurous.

As ever the French topped themselves with this excellent "packed lunch" in a box. Japanese style Bento with French food!

Then spent a long weekend staying with Family.
My Grandad is amazing. He's almost 95 years old, goes for walks every day, climbs up ladders, does the gardening, users power tools like hedge trimmers and chainsaws. I love this picture of him as he nearly always avoids having his picture taken, and I've snapped him here just how he is helping me do some jobs outside the house - flat cap and all !

Went into Manc today for a nice tea out with friends from Work. That new Beetham Tower is really quite a structure dominating the Manchester skyline.

Attended a seminar from those nice people at Adobe all about their latest web products.
They held it at the Lowry Hotel in Salford.
What a superb venue - great art inside the hotel, looks like a really nice place to stay.

Great location of the hotel too - Salford seems really up and coming from when I last went there in the 1990's.

The show itself was really good too and I'm pleased to see that the Merger of Macromedia and Adobe is leading to great things - look out Microsoft!

Mid-Air Snow

Bit of an experriment today - with more snow it seemed like an opportunity to capture a snow flake in mid-air. This proved more difficult that in sounds - snow falls pretty quickly - and hardly ever where you want it to be!
So lots of out of focus photos later, these are the best of a bad bunch - much room for improvement methinks. If it was a school report it would definitely read "Could Try Harder"

At Risk Patients

On a recent visit to hospital I noticed a sign on one of the bed matresses. OK I know you're not supposed to have phones on in there but I had to catch a snap of this - sorry for the focus, it reads "RECOMMENDED FOR USE BY "AT RISK" PATIENTS.

I just have vision of ill people surrounded by doctors in impending risky situations saying - "I'd recommend that matress there, yes the blue one.... aaaaarrrrrgggghhh!"

British Humour

I work with a nice Japanese guy.
Today on the way out of the office he was explaining to me that he was having a problem with his Nissan Micra - turns out that he'd lost a hubcap. Anyway, I asked him where he was going to get a replacement and he told me in his Japanese accent "Nissan main dealer"

This in itself is not an exciting or amusing story - unless you have previously heard this joke - in which case you'll understand why it brought a wry smile to my face to hear him say it in his accent.

I should point out that trying to explain British Ironic Humour to Japanese colleagues is a task we struggle with at times. The old classic about an inflatable lobster and inflatable pair of teeth is still currently beyond translation and explanation.

Incidentally, you can buy an inflatable lobster in a few places but I've not yet found a source for an actual pair of inflatable teeth (sorry inflatable lips don't count!)
If anyone knows where you can get some, please let me know as it'd make a great present for a Japanese friend.

This is true - although it sounds like a joke:
I noticed an advertisement on the notice board at work for a job this week - something to do with Marketing.

Two of the requirements are:

A keen eye for detail
A full driving license, as the job entails driving

This all seems perfectly normal...
But then at the bottom of the ad they've added a statment that reads:

"Should you wish to have a copy of this advertisement in a different format (e.g. braille) please contact Mrs Smith" (name changed to protect the not-so-innocent)

Firstly, I'm none too sure if a braille reader would have a keen eye for detail, or make such a good driver.
But also - if somebody did need a braille copy, then how would be able to read the original ad in the first place to know they could get a version in braille??

I'm thinking of going in with a white stick and sunglasses and applying for the job - just to see the look on their faces!

Went for another walk roud Dovestones today - it is a pleasant stroll, if a little exposed making the breezy quite chilly in the Winter months.

One lap of the lower path around the reservoir takes about an hour and a half to two hours.
It's nice to get some fresh air and blow away those cobwebs

If you're going into the short stay car park at Terminal 3, be sure to head for the third floor - it's much more convenient to be on the right level for the bridge to the Terminal than to faff around with lifts and stairs.

Travelblog - Barcelona

At last - a trip somewhere that's not on business!
Oh the joy of being somewhere and not having to get up and go to work.

You know, travelling as part of your job sounds like a lot of fun, but it's not all quite what it's cracked up to be...
You get all the worst bits of a holiday (getting up early, waiting round in Airports, bumpy flights, rip off taxi rides, hotel food, living out of a suitcase, etc) and you miss out on all the best bits of a holiday (having a lie in, going to the beach, taking in the sights, not having an agenda)
On top of all that you have to work as well.

Oh, I really appreciated this holiday to Barcelona - what a great place. So much warmer than sunny Saddleworth - admittedly, I was the only ejit walking round in a tee shirt, but still they do say it's grim up north, so I suppose I'm hardened a bit by it!
One thing about the Barcelona skyline - you can't help but notice that there are an awful lot of cranes there.

Arriving at the beatiful and unfinished Sagrada Familia Church designed by Antoni Gaudi, from the ground you feel as though the cranes could be part of the architechture set in amongst the stunning spires reaching for that blue sky.

However, up close the intricate detail of the stonework makes the cranes stand a little more out of place.

Moving on to the Barcelona FC stadium - now I'm no football fan, but I can appreciate this place simply for its sheer size - with a capacity of over 100,000 people sitting down it's pretty amazing.

Just to put that into perspective...

Lucky me got sent on a SAP Enterprise (Netweaver) Portal conference in London.
Thought I was going to be bored out of my skull, but it was a very interesting, educating experience.
Ooh, that technology could have some potential if they could only sort out a few fundamental accessibility issues.

Stayed at the Regents Park Marriott near Swiss Cottage, Camden
Had a very nice room with what would have been a superb view over London - if it wasn't so hazy.
You can just about make out Post Office Tower in the photo

The weather was pretty chilly though, and the top floor rooms were equally as cold - that's the price you pay for the Penthouse!

Went for a walk around Dovestone's reservoir - when you first start it looks like just a couple of miles, but then you get round the corner and can see up the resorvoir. I'd say it's probably nearer 5 miles.

I see there's a lot of changes happening in t'Uppermill at the moment. Poor old Bella Italia has been gutted, and seems to be taking ages to be built into something else - I heard rumours that it was on, then off, then on, then off again. But the builders were working there today, so it sounds like it's all on.

And there's a massive hole where Rick Whyman's used to be - I wonder what's coming there? ...Probably more housing courtesy of those nice Wigett people.

Went to our Distribution Center/Manufacturing company in Wales today.

I guess that taxes must be really high in Wales in order to pay for all the signage - not only are all the place names four times as long as anywhere else, but all the signs are printed in both English and Welsh

Wales seems like quite an interesting place though - there are big mountains in the distance and pretty looking countryside. One day I must take the time to investigate Snowdonia.

Trawling through the archives, came across this picture of a rubbish bin in Uppermill village.
"What's the relevance?" I hear you ask...

Well, click on the image above for a larger version and look closely at the center of the Parish logo.
Carefully note the words:
"In The County of York"
Yep, Saddleworth in Yorkshire, that's right!

An Old Favourite

This seems like a good opportunity to post an old favourite photo.
So here's one taken with good old fashioned 35mm on my Nikon F65.

I hear that sadly Nikon are moving away from film and onto Digital - shame as the F65 really got me started with photography, but then again, I do prefer digital SLR now.

Went to this great place in Manchester called The Gaucho Grill.
Superb - if you like beef.
If you're a vegetarian, they do have options, but you might want to look elsewhere for more variety
